THE BIG PICTURE
Introduction

Scores Assigned to Different Values of Variables Used in Identification of Big Picture Potential Habitat Corridors

Name Assigned values Comments
"Barriers"
Highways Four-lane highways -5 pts

Major roads -1 pts

Major roads act as barriers to natural migration. Minor roads and tracks are not considered significant barriers in this analysis.
Active pits and quarries Pits and Quarries -5 pts May have some potential (when abandoned) for rehabilitation.
"Linkages"

Utility Corridors +2 pts Potential "natural" links, but have limitations in terms of canopy height and other factors.
Abandoned railways +5 pts Provide potential as natural links, particularly for open communities such as prairies.
Agreement forests +10 pts Afford some protection and generally forest management will include ecological considerations.
Recreational Provincial Parks +10 pts Afford some protection and management will often include ecological considerations
